The task force chaired by Liesbeth Oosterhagen and Gerhard van Geest succeeded in managing one more great event for the F18 Class, with 141 entered teams coming from 15 countries and 3 continents, and they all have to be heartfully thanked for their dedicated involvement in making the 2005 Worlds a perfect success.

Once more, it was a very close competition between the top 10 teams, most of them coming from the Olympic scene, and it is to notice the excellent final 7th position of the mixed crew compromised of Reindert-Jan VAN DER MEULEN and Carina KNOL (NED).

Defending Champions Darrren BUNDOCK and Glenn ASHBY (AUS) have again won the F18 World Championship, as the last and final day changed the overall standing completely. Mitch BOOTH and Herbert DERCKSEN (NED) were second and Helge SACH and Christian SACH(GER) third.

Defending champions Darren BUNDOCK and Glenn ASHBY sailed impressively during this worldchampionship in the Netherlands. After the lost Thursday where there was no wind, the final day was decisive and full of surprises. Remco KENBEEK and Paul BROUWER (NED) were leading this morning but lost the lead because of a BFD disqualification in the second sailed race of the day.

BOOTH and DERCKSEN sailed very well on the last day and climbed from 10 to the second place.

The French Nissan Team of Jean-Christophe MOURNIAC and Franck CITEAU sailed very consistent the whole series but lost the third place to SACH and SACH on a Capricorn.

Last day morning saw perfect conditions with 15-18 knots of wind with blue skies for race1. During the day, the wind went down and in the third race of the day, only achieved 5-7 knots. Because of the close situation on points in the first 10 of the overall standings, considerable risk was taken by various crews which resulted in a lot of general recalls with black flags.

The medal ceremony got underway at 20:00 hours, with the winners’ trophy, presented by sports authority Erica Terpstra.

All competititors had to deal with light shifting winds and face a strong current during the first day of the final series in the Formula 18 World Championship in Hoek van Holland, Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Race seven proved the most critical for a large number of sailors, as only 26 competitors succeeded in finishing within the time limit in the gold fleet and 16 in the silver fleet.

Even overnight leaders Darren BUNDOCK and Glenn ASHBY (AUS) only managed to place 35 in race nine, allowing Remco KENBEEK and Paul BROUWER (NED) to take the lead. Helge SACH and Christian SACH (GER) have sailed the most consistent series so far and lie in third place, just a point behind BUNDOCK and ASHBY.

The mixed crew of Reindert-Jan VAN DER MEULEN and Carina KNOL (NED) had a great day yesterday scoring two bullets and moving up to fourth place overall.

There were few surprises in the final three qualifying races at the Formula 18 World Championship in Hoek van Holland, Rotterdam, Netherlands yesterday. Australia’s Darren BUNDOCK and Glenn ASHBY (AUS) top the leaderboard after a string of five bullets.

Tuesday’s racing saw three fantastic heats under short choppy waves and a strong current, one of which was sailed in the morning in a light breeze, another in the beginning of the afternoon with a medium breeze, whilst the last heat of the day was sailed in a moderate to strong sea breeze.

After six races and one discard the top five is filled with big names, with multiple Tornado World Champion, Darren BUNDOCK and crew Glenn ASHBY (AUS) leading on a perfect five points. Behind them are two time Olympic medallist, Mitch BOOTH and crew Herbert DERCKSEN (NED) with the French team of Jean-Christophe MOURNIAC and Franck CITEAU (FRA) third. The current Dutch Formula 18 Champions Remco KENBEEK and Paul BROUWER lie fifth.

Following the final three qualifying races yesterday the crews will now be split into gold and silver fleets and today the first of nine scheduled championship races will begin.

France, the Netherlands and Great Britain lead the 141 strong fleet after day one of the 6th F18 World Championship held in Hoek van Holland, Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Three races were completed under strong but perfect wind conditions (four to five Beaufort) for all four qualification groups. The French team of Jean François MOURNIAC and Franck CITEAU hold the lead with six points, closely followed by Mischa HEEMSKERK and Sander DE BOER (NED) and Andy WALSH and Ed BARNEY (GBR).

Unfortunately, more than 60 competitors failed to notice the general recall flag in race three, and consequently only 12 boats turned back to restart. After long but patient hearings, the Jury decided not to give redress to all the 31 protestors.

Three more qualification races are due to be sailed, in the built up to the gold and silver fleet for the finals starting on Wednesday 13 July.
